Frozen Wave

Frozen Wave

My inspiration for Frozen Wave

…comes from my love of travelling to, sailing and diving in remote polar oceans and coastlines.

The waves crash and break and then contrast with icy waters slowly freezing over into pancakes then pack ice.

The colours range from greys and whites through to rich sea greens and turquoises as they reflect nearby glaciers and icebergs.

I travelled in a zodiac near Andenes, Norway, 1400 miles from the North Pole watching humpbacks, fin and sperm whales in a rough ocean.  Nutrient rich cold currents well up from the deep to meet surface currents already colliding from different directions around the land masses.  Conditions are cold and tough but the wave formations are fantastic.

Hand sculpted solid glass frozen waves with a clear core, layered with hand blown coloured glass shards encased in crystal clear glass.

When making, I quench in cold water to crackle the surface like frozen ice and hammer to represent waves and spray frozen mid-air.

Fire polishing and annealing remove sharp edges and stabilise the piece.
